Dear Fellow Patriots, This email is reaching you on the eve of an incredibly important and polarizing election. I do hope that in the midst of the conflict and debate you will make it a point to vote. While I respect the private individual decisions that each citizen will make this year, and while I must note that our organization is nonpartisan, may I encourage you to study and consider the various candidates and their statements and positions about the past and the future. As a lifelong student (if not scholar) I believe there is tremendous value in preserving the tributes to and from the past so that we and future generations may learn from them. These include statues, memorials, art, books, music and even tombs. There seems to be a growing movement to rewrite all of our history with a particularly negative world view and in some cases to erase our history completely. I don’t think this mindset is healthy or intellectually enlightened. In fact, I’d argue it deliberately robs our children and adult citizens with the mile markers that tell our stories and leaves us poorer, weaker, and more vulnerable to confusion and bad judgment in the future. At the Virginia Council we remain committed to preserving history for ALL our citizens and studying our past with curiosity and not condemnation. We want our leaders and people to make informed judgements that will be most likely to spread prosperity and success to the greatest number of our citizens. The past provides important insight into where we came from and what ideas work and which ones do not. As you make up your mind and vote this year, I hope you will spend a little time contemplating who - in every office, grand or small - will be a force for those noble goals and that you will follow your conscience - as free men and women always should. With hope for the future,
John Reid Founding Chairman of The Virginia Council
