Dear Fellow Patriots,
I am returning from a week abroad in very different countries. A few days in Tunisia. A few nights in Algeria. A long weekend in Paris, France for the Olympics.
It's so interesting to see the different cultures and how they carefully preserve their histories and how others obliterate every reference to old leaders and creators based on religion or political dominance.
The West has tended to preserve remnants of the past to help tell its own story for generations still unborn.
It's shocking that a more aggressive strain of erasure has taken hold in our society of late and based on the tumultuous and deadly histories of the countries that subscribe to erasure too, this characteristic doesn't bode well for us.
We saw this cultural vandalism on graphic display again last week in the heart of our nation's capital, where anti-Israel, pro-Hamas (universally recognized as a terrorist group) "demonstrators" vandalized monuments, ripped down and burned the American flag in from of Union Station, spewed anti-semitic slogans and attacked a badly outnumbered Capitol Police force.
And, as Dr. Ben Carson notes in an article included in our news summary this week, a shocking 40 percent of all Democrats in a recent national poll approved of a proposal in New York to removal statues of George Washington in the city. This is an assault on the bedrock principles underpinning our nation. In Dr. Carson's words, as far as the nation is concerned, Washington has been called "the indispensable man" by noted historian James Flexner.
Next year The Virginia Council will be working with legislators and advocates for art and history to codify new rules that will make it difficult (though not impossible) to make changes, move or even dismantle art and monuments.
Someone has to stop the reckless and arrogant behaviors we have seen on display of late and we are going to step up to save our cultural heritage before it's all destroyed.
Our children and grandchildren are owed a rational and thoughtful type of leadership and stewardship of our society, and we will offer it.
I hope you will help us in this effort with your own personal advocacy and your financial support by donating here.
Forces are aligned to erase the guideposts of our past in an effort to destroy our culture and society, our state and our nation and we must not let them win!
John Reid, Founding Chairman
