News from The Virginia Council 3/23/25

Dear friends,
We present a special guest for the letter this day:
 
Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it. I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House.....
It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace– but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

Since Doug Wilder’s tenure as governor, Virginia’s political landscape has transformed into a battleground of competing interests. His leadership marked the end of an era defined by civility and fiscal responsibility. How can we restore those principles today? Governor Wilder will offer his insights on reclaiming that legacy. 
 
L. Douglas Wilder’s distinguished public service career spans more than 70 years. In 1990, he made history as the first African American elected governor in the United States, serving as Virginia’s 66th governor until 1994. Renowned for his strong fiscal stewardship, he successfully balanced the state budget during challenging economic times. Under his administration, Financial World magazine recognized Virginia as the nation’s best-managed state for two consecutive years. 
 
Today, Governor Wilder is a Distinguished Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs where he lectures and hosts symposia, including “Race in Academia,” “The Triple Pandemic,” and "Racism, Health, and Accountability," and most recently "HBCUs and the Absence of Support." He is also the author of "Son of Virginia: A Life in America’s Political Arena," published by Lyons Pres

Mike Emanuel spoke at The Virginia Forum event on Thursday March 20th to an audience eager to hear more about journalism, media and governance in the 21st century. Mike spoke seriously about the responsibility of "being first while getting it right" and the pressures facing the industry. Mike, Chief Washington correspondent for FOX News also regaled us with background stories of covering the momentus events in the White House. He also shared some fun stories about Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama
