Dear friends and citizens, from George Washington's Farewell Address, 1796: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.” Those who incorrectly proclaim that the separation of church and state is a tenant of the Constitution are the same who believe that government is the ultimate arbiter of morality through the priesthood of politicians. While the Constitution and the Bill of Rights forbid the compelled imposition of state religion, they do not ever suggest that government itself should stand in its stead. The founders of this country understood that without a humble awareness of God's power, and gratitude for the embodiment of rights in us as creatures in his image, that our political experiment in self-governance would end in failure. Because the founders appreciated the fallen nature of mankind, and of politicians in particular, having studied the history of government and survived through the disassociation from an empire, they realized that a written compact was only the start of good government. It is the grace that lives in men's and women's hearts that ensures its survival and the flourishing of all its citizens. We are in the heart of election season in the Commonwealth. Pay attention to the aims, goals, and methods of each party. And be aware when those criteria are hidden, obscured, or obfuscated. Especially when they run counter to the values and beliefs of our state constitution, much less our national compact. Please act on your beliefs so that you'll be free to live them, as God intended. PS: Please share our newsletter with your family and friends. We source our stories and videos from a diverse array of trusted sources (& some curve balls from the other side) since ‘legacy media’ has become increasingly fragmented, difficult to follow (RTD six days a week!) and is designed not to convey facts but to confirm prejudice and foment rage. Help those who need to hear more reasoned discourse. They can sign up for a free membership and newsletter delivery here. Sincerely,
Will McGurn Interim President, The Virginia Council
